The Hammacher Schlemmer catalog was released to nearly 5 million households across the United States featuring The Modern Christmas Treeā¢ on the cover of the magazine, web site, and the tree will be displayed in the window of their landmark New York store late this year.
About Modern Christmas Treesā¢
The Modern Christmas Tree was originally invented by engineer and designer Lawrence āBudāĀ Stoecker in the mid-1960ās. The contemporary holiday tree is made of concentric acrylic ringsĀ and decorated with chandelier crystals and ornaments. The tree hangs from the ceiling and isĀ illuminated by a spotlight from underneath the tree, projecting shadows and reflectionsĀ throughout the room.
Budās grandson Matt Bliss, who patented the design in 2012, carries on The Modern ChristmasĀ Treeā¢ and this Stoecker family tradition. Bud suffered from Alzheimerās and sadly passedĀ away a week before the patent was issued. Weeks later, members of the Stoecker familyĀ celebrated his life at an exhibition of his trees at the original Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim,Ā California. The exhibit continues to be a part of Disneyās annual holiday festivities. Bliss isĀ also a modern design and architecture enthusiast from Colorado. A portion of the proceeds isĀ donated to the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimerās Association in his Grandfatherās name.
āThis is a dream come true for my Grandpa and his trees,ā says Bliss. āGrowing up with thisĀ tree, I knew it was beautiful and brilliant and now millions of people will get to see what IĀ see and saw growing up. Now they can share the tradition with their family. I couldnāt beĀ happier!ā
The tree has also been photographed in a few of the most important mid century modernĀ homes in the United States, including the Stahl House in Los Angleles, CA designed by PierreĀ Koenig and immortalized by the photographs of Julius Schulman. The list also includes theĀ Sculptured House designed by Charles Deaton, later coined the Sleeper House, made famousĀ by the movie Sleeper, directed and staring Woody Allen.
